Phonological Derivation in Optimality Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
Optimality Theory is a constraint-based theory of phonology which allows constraints to conflict and to be violated. Consequently, implementing the theory presents problems for declarative constraint-based processing frameworks. On the basis of two regularity assumptions, that sets are regular and that constraints can be modelled by transducers, this paper presents and proves correct algorithms for computing the action of constraints, and hence deriving surface forms.

Optionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment
The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
متن کاملIs French Optimal?
In this article, an analysis will be presented of a central part of the phonology of French in the framework of Optimality Theory (OT). OT has three major principles that characterize and define it: (i) the idea that phonological processes are driven by their output, (ii) the idea that constraint are ranked and can be violated, and (iii) the idea that there is no genuine derivation, but just a ...
متن کاملToward a Nonderivational Account of Epenthesis and Exceptional Stress in Dakota
Recent work in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993, McCarthy and Prince 1993, to appear) has suggested that phonological regularities can be explained without reference to phonological rules, strictly in terms of constraints on representational wellformedness. A unique aspect of Optimality Theory (OT) is that candidates are evaluated in parallel: there is no serial derivation. Given th...

متن کاملPhonological recoverability in dialects of Dutch
One of the fundamental problems for constraint-based theories of phonology is the issue of opacity: a phonological process applies where it should not, or does not apply where it should, if we look at the phonological context on the surface. Since well-formedness constraints in a theory such as Optimality Theory typically refer to surface structure only, it is a puzzle how to deal with such phe...
